Benefits of Tuition

  • Succeeding in Exams

Preparing for exams can be stressful. My tuition aims to alleviate worries about ill-preparedness and instead help students feel confident about reaching their exam goals. From getting a firm grasp of the curriculum to knowing how to approach a paper, I provide them with the tools to achieve their potential.

  • Learning Designed For You

Classroom style teaching does not suit everyone. It can also have consequences on understanding more complex concepts. That’s where personalised tutoring can step in, ensuring you can learn in a style that suits you and excel in A-Level Chemistry.

  • Preparing for Chemistry in Higher Education

Moving to the next stage in education can be an intimidating step. I’m here to help A-Level learners become confident in their skills and find ways to approach new challenges as potential future STEM undergraduates.

Christopher is THE most fantastic maths and chemistry teacher. He is patient, kind and relates well to young teenagers. Nothing is too much for him. My kids both had lessons and did very well! You are lucky to be taught by him! Thank you Christopher!

Exam Board Overview

Choosing the right A-Level Chemistry exam board can significantly impact a student’s experience and preparedness for higher education.

Here’s a comparative look at the three major A-Level Chemistry exam boards: OCR, AQA, and Edexcel.

  • OCR A-Level Chemistry

OCR is often considered the most approachable of the A-Level Chemistry options. Its content is less demanding than other boards, and the exams are well-structured and easy to follow. Students benefit from a significant number of multiple-choice questions, with 15 in both Paper 1 and Paper 2. These papers each last 2 hours and 15 minutes, allowing ample time to complete the exam. Paper 3, which is shorter at 1 hour and 30 minutes, is more synoptic and creative, challenging students to apply their knowledge to novel situations. The format and style of OCR exams make it a popular choice for students who prefer a clearer, more structured assessment.

  • AQA A-Level Chemistry

AQA offers a more content-heavy and challenging A-Level Chemistry course. Students must learn a broader range of topics, especially in areas such as transition metals, NMR spectroscopy, and organic chemistry mechanisms. Unlike OCR, AQA’s multiple-choice questions are only found in Paper 3, where students face 30 multiple-choice questions. All three papers are 2 hours long, which can present time management challenges for some students. AQA’s in-depth approach requires more rigorous preparation but provides a solid foundation for university-level chemistry, making it a good option for students who want comprehensive coverage of the subject.s.

  • Edexcel A-Level Chemistry

Edexcel is regarded as one of the more challenging boards, with a reputation for tricky exam layouts and unconventional question styles. Paper 1 and Paper 2 are 1 hour and 45 minutes each, while Paper 3 is notably longer at 2 hours and 30 minutes. The exam papers are often seen as less student-friendly, and many find them difficult to navigate. Edexcel also includes multiple-choice questions, but the exact count varies depending on the year and paper. Despite the challenging format, students who excel under pressure and can adapt to the unique question styles may thrive in this system.

  • My Take on the Exam Boards

From my experience as a Chemistry tutor, I’ve observed that each exam board presents its own set of advantages and challenges. OCR is ideal for students who appreciate a well-organized exam and prefer a slightly more accessible content load. AQA offers a rigorous curriculum with a deep dive into complex topics, making it a strong choice for those who are passionate about chemistry and want a head start for university-level study. Edexcel, while often the most difficult to master, provides a robust testing experience for students who can handle its less intuitive structure.

Ultimately, the best exam board for you depends on your strengths, preferences, and future academic goals. If you’re aiming to study chemistry at a higher level, AQA may give you the depth you need, while OCR offers a smoother experience during your A-Level journey. For those ready to take on a real challenge, Edexcel provides the toughest test of resilience and adaptability.
